The SF Sketchfest Dozen: The Next Wave of Stand-Up Comedy Stars SF Sketchfest presents a dozen hand-picked stand-up comedians on the rise—names you might not know now, but will be hearing a lot from soon.
According to The Huffington Post, NYC-based stand up-comedian and writer Phoebe Robinson is one of “18 Funny Women You Should Be Following On Twitter,” but with the way things are going, it seems the place to follow her is on TV.
Phoebe is a writer for MTV’s “Girl Code” and most recently co-hosted an episode of the new series “Raising McCain”, appeared on FX’s “Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell,” was a panelist on VH1’s “Big Morning Buzz,” and has been featured on several talking head shows for Pivot TV, VH-1, and the TV Guide Channel such as “100 Shows to See Before You Die,” “25 Biggest Reality Star Blunders,” and “40 Greatest Hip Hop Songs.”
When not on television, Phoebe’s a writer for Glamour.com and contributes to The New York Times. Her blog Blaria (aka Black Daria) was picked up by The Huffington Post and is regularly featured on their website. She has also been published in Time Out NY, The NY Post, and The Smoking Jacket.
Phoebe has also made her mark in the world of stand up. She was a finalist in NBC’s Stand Up for Diversity competition and was a part of their 2011-2012 USA college tour. Since the tour, she has performed in the Bridgetown Comedy Festival, the Eugene Mirman Festival, the New York Underground Comedy Festival, the All Jane No Dick Festival, SF Sketchfest, the Women in Comedy Festival, the Brooklyn Comedy Festival, and the New York Comedy Festival.
Phoebe has also branched out into radio as she has been on Sirius XM’s Raw Dog Comedy, Canada’s CBC Radio, and bitch magazine’s podcast.
Sara Schaefer is a critically acclaimed standup comedian, writer, and producer based in New York City. She is the co-creator, writer, executive producer and host of the MTV late night series, “Nikki & Sara Live.”
Sara won two Emmy awards for her work as the Head Blogger for “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” She was also one of Comedy Central’s Comics to Watch in 2010 and this year she makes her stand-up comedy TV debut on “John Oliver’s NY Stand Up Show.” She has also appeared on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” “Best Week Ever,” E!, Fuse, & AOL and has written for “BestWeekEver.tv” and “Who Wants to Be A Millionaire.” In 2010, she started a Tumblr called “Faces of The Last Season of Oprah” which was a viral hit. She currently co-hosts a podcast called “You Had To Be There” with her MTV co-host, comedian Nikki Glaser.
Sara grew up in Richmond, Virginia, and got her higher learning’s at the College of William & Mary. After a year of weirdness in New Orleans, she moved to New York City to pursue comedy. Working by day as a financial analyst at a securities fraud law firm, she pursued comedy at night, performing sketch, stand up, and improv all over the city. She gathered critical acclaim for her bi-weekly stage show, Sara Schaefer is Obsessed With You, for which she won the ECNY award for Best Host in 2004.
In 2006, Sara became the host of AOL’s on-line music/comedy show, “The DL.” Over the course of a year, Sara appeared in over 350 videos with both legendary and up-and-coming musicians and performers. From there, she began blogging for BestWeekEver.tv, and then, in 2009, she began working as the head blogger for “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” where she collected a Webby and two Emmy Awards.
In addition to her work with MTV on “Nikki & Sara Live,” Sara is also developing a pilot for MTV that takes place in the fashion world.
